Description

GRYPHON
Simone Larroquette, 25

Simone is from another family line of expatriates from the Lost Continents.
She is the granddaughter of Lemuria's exiled Prince N'aviin, and his bride, Ori, an Atlantean sorceress. It was their forbidden love that started the 3rd Civil War between Atlantis and Lemuria in the bearly 1950's, and broke the magic that kept the two lost lands from the outside world. N'aviin and Ori escaped their land and made their way to the American South. Specifically, New Orleans, Louisiana. They changed their identities and adopted the surname of Larroquette to blend with the Americans and lived a modest life. It was shortly thereafter that they took notice of the resurgence of superhero culture that permeated the country at the time. Ori desperately wanted to use her gifts in a constructive and helpful way, possibly to use her mystic powers to become a superheroine herself, but, her husband disagreed. They were, after all, attempting to keep a low profile.

Seeing as Atlanteans and Lemurians were dark skinned and appeared to share a bloodline with Africans, Ori was generally outraged at the treatment of African American people during those dark times of civil unrest in the 50's and 60's.
When she became pregnant with her first child, a son whom the couple named 'Royal' as a nod to their origins, she bestowed upon him many mystical boons, blessings and protections to keep him safe. They boy grew tall and strong. He was very fast and his senses very sharp. His mother regaled him with every newspaper and magazine clipping of the big-city superheroes that she was so enamored with and told him of his own hidden royal Lemurian heritage.
At 18, he moved away from his home to another Louisiana city, 'Bastille' which was about 80 miles away from New Orleans.
There, he met Delia Ross, a sweet-natured college girl who was, secretly a low-powered metahuman vigilante by night, calling herself Black Cobra. She had enhanced strength, speed and agility which she used to its full effect. She could even see in the dark. Bastille was no cesspool of crime and supervillainy, but whatever trouble arose that the police had difficulty with, Black Cobra (and Royal, using his own gifts and calling himself the "Barrow-Wight") would lend a hand.
The dynamic duo fell in love and married within 3 years. In 1973, during what would be one of their biggest ordeals, Black Cobra and Barrow-Wight ran afoul of a time-travelling anti-hero calling herself "Eliminatrix", who'd patterned herself after a series of 20th century action movies starring Arnold Schwarzeneggar, who was jaunting back and forth through time, murdering the ancestors of the supervillains from her own time to make sure they would never come to be.
Her target for the day just happened to be a local businessman, Adam Bryant, whom, according to Eliminiatrix, was the great great grandfather of a psychotic killer cyborg from her time called "Railgun", who would eventually be responsible for destroying the cities of Dallas, Texas; Moore, Oklahoma and Bastille, Louisiana. After a very rough night of battle, Adam Bryant admitted that he was secretly impotent, (and medicinal technology being what it was in 1973) couldn't possibly be the ancestor of RailGun. Eliminatrix, stunned by this revelation began to question her entire crusade, which gave Black Cobra and Barrow-Wight their chance to take the fight to HER. In the scuffle, between the three of them and the unfortunate timing of a salvo from the local police, Eliminatrix was killed, and her temporal travel device glitched, sending her corpse and the two would-be superheroes hurtling through time to the far-flung year 1991!
Deciding that the last adventure was a bit out of their league, and seeing how much the superhero landscape had changed in the 18 years since they'd "disappeared", Royal and Delia Larroquette decided to quit adventuring altogether, have a second honeymoon and settle down.

It was only about a year or two later that their daughter, Simone, was born.
As she grew, Simone exhibited superpowers that went beyond those of her parents, most likely due to the Atlantean magic in her blood, PLUS whatever it was that gave her mother her own powers.
By the time she was 16, Simone was able to lift a van, fly at speeds of over 160 mph, see in near-complete darkness was tougher than a 25 cent steak. Her parents and grandparents actually encouraged her to become a superheroine. Perhaps out of nostalgia for their glory days... Her grandmother, Ori, who had not changed much, was very insistent that Simone protect the socially downtrodden, especially.

Bastille, Louisiana had become a darker place. The superhuman element, both good and evil, that wasn't there in her parents' (original) day was definitely there now. Her family, now ALL living miles away in New Orleans, were not a concern as far as the whole "protecting the loved ones" thing was concerned, so Simone didn't see much use of a 'secret identity' after high school. Her sandy-brown hair and yellow-brown eyes made her stand out too much for that. So, in her senior year of high school, she began tentatively using her powers to fight crime and mayhem. A fan of mythology and monsters, she named herself "Gryphon", as she saw herself in her imagination as having the powers of a hybrid between an eagle and a lion.

Between ages 18 and 22, she spent her time with a loose collection of other local young superhero types: The golem of living crystal called 'Moonrock'; The young hero, The Glyph, powered by a mystical artifact that she would find out later was an Atlantean relic, and the
reformed criminal speedster, Runamok - both of whom she would briefly date during the course of their partnership; and the Latina pyrokine with the childish and dirty sense of humor who gave herself a childish and dirty name, that Gryphon herself would REFUSE to call her. Instead, Gryphon referred to her as "FireCat".
That partnership ended badly - with the death of MoonRock and a battle between Glyph and Runamok which ended with the speedster going back to his old villainous path in a BIG way.
Gryphon decided to leave Bastille, Louisiana and head north - to Kansas City, Missouri - to try and reinvent her life.
Thus far, she is happy there. She's not the only superhero covering the twin cities in Missouri and Kansas. Still "twitchy" over what happened to her last team, she is reluctant to join any new ones, but will not hesitate to lend a hand whenever she's needed.
Simone Larroquette now works normal 9 to 5 at a rental car establishment. People rarely recognize her as Gryphon, seeing as how Kansas City (both of them) are a larger and more bustling area than Bastille was... and that's just how Simone likes it.

Now, at age 25 and at the peak of her powers, Gryphon has the ability to fly at close to 300 miles per hour. She is strong enough to lift about 40 tons and can see in darkness with added telescopic vision for about 3 miles. She has a vocal sonic scream attack that she refers to as her "sonic roar".  She is neither invulnerable nor bulletproof, but is very tough and has posthuman level stamina.
